Song #1, John Patch, is based on a true story!
A Great Canadian Invention:

In the 1830's, John Patch was a sailor and fisherman the Yarmouth, Nova Scotia area. During the winter of 1832-33, Patch developed and built a "screw propeller". This device was invented to propel (move) a boat ahead in the water, replacing sails or paddle wheels. Robert and Nathan Butler helped him by building a hand crank and wooden gear to be used with the device.

In 1834, Captain Robert Kelley used it on his ship the Royal George. There are several versions of how Patch lost the rights to his invention and unfortunately he died in 1861, penniless in a Yarmouth poorhouse.
